A recent study published by the European Drought Observatory reveals that Europe is currently suffering from the worst drought it has witnessed in the last 500 years. The severe drought situation has been affecting the region since the beginning of this year, and the situation has been worsening ever since.
The study mentions that Europe has been affected by the lack of precipitation and scorching heatwaves in the summer. The study adds that this has widely impacted the water resources, hydropower generation, and cooling systems of power plants across Europe.
The report states that 47 percent of the European region is facing warming conditions and that it has dried up 17 percent of the moisture in the soil. The production of crops such as maize, soybeans, and sunflowers has also been impacted due to this unfortunate phenomenon. As per the report, maize production could see a decline of 16 percent while soybean and sunflowers crops by 15 percent and 12 percent respectively from the average of the previous five years.
The ongoing drought situation has also dried up the rivers in various European regions. In some countries, old sunken ships, ominous stones, and several lost villages have been found as the water levels of rivers have gone to alarming levels. The report has warned that the current temperature levels will pertain in the western Euro-Mediterranean region in the coming months until November 2022.
