In 2001, a severe famine struck Malawi, destroying their crops and leaving them without the means to buy or sell anything. Unable to afford his education any longer, Kamkwamba was forced to abandon school. Yet, he never gave up on his thirst for knowledge and sought refuge in the village library. His fascination with science, especially, sparked his imagination and became the centre of his studies.
The Birth of a Windmill
Undeterred by his circumstances, William Kamkwamba transformed his limited resources into tools of innovation. He started borrowing books from a small community lending library at his former primary school. One of the books was an eighth-grade American textbook called “Using Energy”, which featured wind turbines on its cover. Kamkwamba borrowed the book despite not being able to read English. And at 14 he might not have even realised the edge he was standing on. But he followed the call. He relied on the book's illustrations and set out to build a windmill capable of powering his family's home.
With a keen eye for innovation, William Kamkwamba transformed various materials into something extraordinary. He took scrap metal that others had thrown away and gave it new life by using it in the construction of his windmill. Even old and unused bicycle parts became integral components of his creation. He didn't stop there; he found a way to repurpose tractor components that are normally used for something else and used them in his towering windmill. And amidst it all, he even utilised the resilient blue gum trees, typically unnoticed in their natural habitat to construct a basic yet functional windmill, standing at an impressive height of 16 feet (5 meters).
After making sure it worked, Kamkwamba brought electricity to his family's house, filling their lives with the brightness of electric light. The news of his remarkable achievement quickly spread throughout the village, and neighbours eagerly lined up to charge their cell phones, benefiting from the electricity generated by his windmill.
But William's creativity didn't stop there. He continued to push the limits of his creativity and innovation. To ensure a reliable and constant source of energy, he connected the windmill to a car battery and ingeniously crafted light switches and circuit breakers using nails and wire. Understanding the need for more power, he extended the height of the windmill to twelve meters, capturing stronger winds above the surrounding trees. And he didn't stop at that; he took on another ambitious project - building a second windmill, this time to power a water pump. Moreover, he developed a drip irrigation system, enabling more efficient and effective farming practices. This innovation not only increased agricultural productivity but also enhanced food security for the community.
