On the 21st of October 2022, members of the Egyptian COP27 Presidency Team and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held an all-day consultation with speakers from previous COP Presidencies in Cairo.
The workshop, organized by the Centre for Multilateral Negotiations (CEMUNE), examined how COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh will address and progress the various climate and economic concerns that are now ongoing.
There were 14 speakers from the previous COP Presidencies including COP20 President Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, COP26 Lead Negotiator Archie Young, Tomasz Chruszczow (former High Level Climate Champion for COP24), Dr Hakima El Haite (former High Level Climate Champion for COP22), and Kaveh Guilanpour (Former Co-lead Negotiator on Climate Change for the EU), along with the UNFCCC and COP27 Presidency members
In group discussions, participants highlighted the danger of ongoing and emerging challenges having a greater influence on COP27 than in past editions and addressed the best ways to guarantee that the political leadership at the global level can continue to steer the process.
Attendees highlighted potential issues that may impact the long- and short-term goals that the international community agreed to under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, including the current situation in Ukraine, high energy costs, and the expected economic recession.
