This was the first of 18 separate records from his team over the next 30 years, increasing silicon cell efficiency by over 50% in relative terms during the process.
It was a moment of triumph, as it meant that solar energy could become a practical and efficient source of power.
But Dr. Green and his team didn't stop there. They continued their journey and broke more efficiency records. They pushed the boundaries, reaching efficiencies of 20 per cent in 1985, 24 per cent in 1994, and 25 per cent in 2008. Their solar cell technology, known as PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell), became the backbone of modern solar power, accounting for 90 per cent of global solar cell production.
"If you bought a solar panel recently, it will most likely have UNSW PERC technology used in it," Dr. Green proudly declares.
