COP27 is on the threshold of completion, but differences still persist on important issues

The ongoing COP 27 summit on climate change in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt is now on the threshold of conclusion. Despite this, differences still remain on many important issues including 'loss and damage'. In such a situation, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called upon all parties to this conference to come together to find a solution to this great challenge facing mankind, realizing the importance of the present moment.

The UN chief told reporters gathered at the conference that there was clearly a breach in the wall of trust between the countries of the North and the South, along with developed and emerging economies. In such a situation, he cautioned that “this is not the time to point fingers at each other.  Blaming each other can only ensure each other's downfall.” He urged countries to make a promise of meaningful action for the good of common people and the planet.

The UN chief reminded world leaders that global emissions have reached their highest peak in history and climate impact is ravaging economies and societies. According to him "the most effective way to win back trust is to meet the quest for financial support for developing countries with an ambitious and credible agreement on loss and damage."
