18th November 2022, the twelfth day of the COP27 at Sharm-el-Sheikh was supposed to be the last day of the conference. However, due to the disagreements between parties on a number of crucial issues, including funding for loss and damage, the climate summit had to be prolonged in order to allow more time for negotiations.
The major decision of the day was the
European Union agreeing to a fund for loss and damage, a longstanding demand of
vulnerable countries. However, the consensus came with conditions: the fund
would be only for the “most vulnerable” countries, such as island states and a
few others. This excludes countries such as Pakistan and India that are part of
the G77 bloc. Major emitters like China are anticipated to be required to
contribute to this fund, as well as possibly India.
In addition, youth activists staged a
Friday climate strike to mark the last formal day of negotiations.
