A new study published in the Nature Journal has warned that the production of tomatoes across the globe could be worsened due to the impacts of climate change. Tomato is the staple consumed all over the world and it's the main ingredient used in the manufacturing of ketchup.
The researchers from Aarhus University in Denmark adopted a mathematical model to get an estimate of how the rising global temperature will impact the cultivation of tomatoes. They found that there is a possibility that the production of tomatoes will reduce by 50% between 2050-2100.
The study reported that China, Italy and California which are the biggest tomato-producing regions yielding about two-thirds of total tomato production are at high risk due to the climate change impacts. By 2050, there would be a six per cent decline in tomato cultivation, the study adds.
