Climate change awareness through creative workshops among children

Recognizing the significance of emotions in addressing climate change, there is a growing emphasis on fostering a sense of connection with the natural world among future generations. By nurturing this connection, young individuals can better express their concerns about climate issues and become motivated to actively contribute to positive change.

A Delhi-based non-profit organization called Slam Out Loud, founded by Jigyasa Labroo in 2017, is working towards building empathy and promoting creative problem-solving in the context of climate action. The organization facilitates arts-based learning initiatives, making them accessible to children from marginalized communities through workshops and programs.

One of Slam Out Loud's key objectives is to instil creative confidence in these children, empowering them with essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives, regardless of their aspirations or goals. By engaging young minds through art and encouraging emotional expression, Slam Out Loud aims to equip the next generation with the necessary tools to address climate challenges and contribute positively to society.

The inspiration for developing climate change lessons at Slam Out Loud emerged directly from the students themselves. Instead of instructing them to write poetry on specific topics, the organization observed that many children naturally gravitated towards writing about the challenges they witnessed in their own communities.

As the children discussed climate change, they shared a sense of helplessness arising from witnessing the reduction of trees and the deterioration of air quality, particularly for those living in Delhi, where the program initially began. The workshops hosted by Slam Out Loud extend to various cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, allowing children from different regions to engage in this meaningful dialogue and creative expression about climate-related issues.
