BMW to reduce the carbon footprint of its vehicles by 40% by 2030

In an exclusive report published by Moneycontrol, Ilka Horstmeier, a member of the board of management at BMW AG (Worldwide), labour relations and human resources revealed that BMW is committed to the 1.5-degree target want to reduce the overall carbon footprint of every car of BMW by 40 per cent by 2030.

Ilka emphasised that the production of electric vehicles is not just enough to move forward. “Building electric cars is not enough to be a sustainable company. So we broke this 40per cent target into the usage phase, in the production and in, of course, the supply chain, because that is the biggest driver of the carbon footprint of a car,” she said.

To achieve its climate action goals BMW is using sustainable options to heat their selective plants. In India, BMW is using solar energy as they have photovoltaic cells installed in the Chennai plant and in South Africa, they are using biogas as they have access to a nearby cattle farm.

While discussing the production strategy of the BMW’s electric vehicles she said, “All the batteries for our next generation of electromobility will be produced by green energy. we have a tie-up with Emirates Global Aluminium to supply more than 40,000 tonnes of aluminium per year to our foundry produced by the solar power from the desert sun in Dubai.
