Biodiversity plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem and maintaining the continuity of life on earth. Many species of fauna and flora are becoming extinct due to the increasing human population, deforestation, poaching, pollution, and global warming. Therefore, the threat looming over biodiversity is also posing a risk to human existence. According to the report of the IPCC supported by the United Nations, about 25 percent of plant and animal species are facing the threat of extinction. If concerted efforts are not made for the conservation of biodiversity, then in the coming few decades, more than one million species of animals, birds and plants will become extinct.
India’s geographical area constitutes 2.4 percent of the total area of the world, but about 91 thousand species of animals and 45 thousand species of plants are found here. A wide range of different types of plants and organisms are helpful in building a healthy ecosystem. Trees and plants circulate air and save the earth from the danger of excess heat by absorbing greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Coral reefs and mangrove forests provide protection from cyclones and tsunamis, while some organisms, such as bees and bats help pollinate flowers. In this way, a healthy ecosystem is formed with the cooperation of all, and the unpleasant interference of human beings is disrupting this balance.
