April 2022 was the hottest month in India on record, a new study reveals

The analysis from the global temperature database created by the US space research agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) highlighted that the period from June-July-August (JJA) may have been the world's warmest season since 1880.

According to the report, the Earth was 0.97 °C (°C) warmer in 2022 than the 1951–1980 average.  This season has been the warmest on Earth since 1880.  This is because the deviation from the normal measures is the difference with a fixed value (1951–1980 average).  It can be used to rank the years on the side of absolute temperature.  India is distinguished by its absence among the hottest places of JJA this season.  There are reasons for this, one of which is the size of India, which is larger than most European countries.  Even if some parts of India are experiencing one of their warmest years, the country's average could be dragged down by parts that are not.  Especially when JJA months are the hottest in India.

A state-wise analysis shows that this difference between regions has played a role in India which is not as hot as the rest of the world this season.  Among the 24 states (for which this analysis is possible using NASA data) the JJA season was the top three warmest in six since 1880: Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Ladakh.  Nevertheless, it was only the sixth warmest JJA season for the entire country.  The one-month breakup shows India ranked sixth on the basis of August temperatures alone, which were the fifth warmest since 1880, while June and July were only the 15th and 16th warmest.  This is reflected in the regional spread of the warm monsoon.  JJA season was the hottest ever in Assam, Manipur and Arunachal only;  August was the hottest ever in six states: Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Manipur and Arunachal.  To be sure, taking April, May and June into account, India experienced its fourth hottest summer after 2010, 2019 and 2016.  However, April was the hottest ever in India.
