Apple has announced the development of carbon-free aluminium used in manufacturing its latest iPhone SE 2022. The brand said the carbon-free aluminium used to develop the new smartphone series was produced using hydropower by Elysis– a Canada based smelting company.
As per Apple’s statement, the low-carbon technology used by Elysis emits oxygen during the smelting process as a byproduct instead of greenhouse gasses generated in the traditional method. This process is helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the devices made from aluminium components.
This is one of the 50 projects backed by Apple’s Green Bond investment which started in 2016 after the Global climate change conference 2015 (COP21). Apple has mentioned that an investment of $4.7 billion has been made in the developmental projects to reduce the brand’s carbon footprint as it aims to become 100% carbon neutral across its supply chain and products by 2030.
