Amidst India’s coal crisis, nuclear reactors struggle to provide promising results

India’s leading position in world’s energy producers has been in a dilapidated state lately. With most of the power plants having just days worth of coal left, officials are pushing for alternative sources. Wind and solar sources are proving to be efficient replacements, but nuclear energy is also gaining attention.

Nuclear power is a high-yielding renewable and eco-friendly source of energy, available 24x7. It has the capacity to secure long-term energy supply of the country in a sustainable manner, minister of state in the department of atomic energy, Jitendra Singh informed the Parliament .

Despite the knowledge of its potential, the share of nuclear-based electricity produced in India is much lower than some of the developed economies. European countries like Ukraine and France generate 70 per cent and 51 per cent of electricity respectively from nuclear sources. In total eclectricity generation they lag by only 3.3 per cent of India’s total electricity production.

According to International Atomic Energy Agency, the electricity generation through nuclear sources was 3.27 percent for India in 2001, and was the same in 2020 as well. To achieve the global net-zero and renewable energy goal, India needs to invest and develop its nuclear reactors sooner rather than later.
