Third South Summit- Leaving No One Behind

Kampala hosted the Third South Summit on January 21-22, 2024, with the theme 'Leaving No One Behind'. The meeting aimed to enhance collaboration among the 134 G-77 members in a competitive global economy. The priorities are trade, investment, sustainable development, climate change, poverty reduction, and the digital economy.

This conference was preceded by the Second South Summit in Doha, Qatar in 2005 and the initial summit in Havana, Cuba in 2000. This summit was held in Africa, as per the geographic rotation.

On the 60th anniversary of the G-77, the UNGA President praised Uganda for hosting this historic event. He praised Cuba's outgoing leadership and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the face of COVID-19, inflation, economic difficulties, and climate change.

The assembly stressed the UN's role in Gaza's humanitarian crisis. The leaders highlighted SDG gaps, poverty, and environmental crises in poor countries.

The summit argued for international financial system reforms to address the needs of the Global South, promote multilateralism, and reduce debt. It emphasized the importance of South-South collaboration in bolstering North-South ties and promoting global participation.

The summit underlined the importance of solidarity and cooperation in overcoming contemporary difficulties, citing the G-77 members' shared history of struggle and perseverance. The President of the United Nations General Assembly advocated a renewed commitment to leaving no one behind and achieving sustainable development.

The assembly took notice of upcoming UN initiatives, such as conferences for Small Island Developing States and Landlocked Developing Countries, as well as the UN General Assembly Sustainability Week. It noted the importance of utilizing modern technologies to promote human welfare while reducing risks.

The assembly ended by urging positive transformation, global solidarity, and multilateralism to promote peace, prosperity, and sustainability. It requested that all G-77 members work together to achieve these objectives.
