To combat the growing threat of electronic waste, the Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (HPSPCB) launched a three-day e-waste collection drive in Shimla, partnering with Karo Sambhav, a circular economy organization. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about proper e-waste disposal and provide convenient channels for residents to responsibly discard unwanted electronics.
A mobile van served as the collection hub, traversing various localities across the city. Over the three days, it visited Dhalli, Sanjauli, Nav Bahar, Chhota Shimla, Khalini, Kanglog, Boileauganj, Summer Hill, Totu, and Jatogh, collecting a significant amount of e-waste from homes, businesses, and even the HP Secretariat.
Sanjay Gupta, chairman of HPSPCB, emphasized the criticality of addressing e-waste, highlighting its rapid growth and potential environmental hazards. He stressed the link between rising electronic device usage and e-waste generation, urging residents to participate in the drive and contribute to a cleaner environment.
This initiative not only provided a convenient way for residents to dispose of their e-waste but also served as an educational platform. By collaborating with Karo Sambhav, the HPSPCB ensured responsible recycling and processing of collected items, minimizing potential harm and promoting resource recovery.
While the three-day drive has concluded, the fight against e-waste continues. The success of this initiative demonstrates the importance of ongoing awareness campaigns, accessible collection points, and responsible recycling practices. With continued efforts, Shimla can pave the way for sustainable e-waste management, setting an example for other Indian cities.
