The Environmental Peacebuilding Association expressed their concern & solidarity towards this humanitarian crisis with more than 902 individuals and 156 organizations from 75 countries as signatories in an open letter to spread awareness and attract global attention towards the same. The open letter issued by the association highlighted that the use of weaponry in the urban societies of Ukraine is causing air, water and ground pollution which will have long-lasting effects. Ukraine is a significant exporter of food crops such as wheat & corn and the current situation has also posed a serious threat to the food security of Ukrainians and the neighbouring nations.

The data shared by the Environmental Performance Index highlighted Ukraine’s low performance under environmental indicators like air quality, biodiversity production, and ecosystem health and the impacts of the Russian invasion is only going to push it to the worse.

While highlighting the harmful chemical emissions and risk of toxic contaminants Ken Conca, professor of international relations at the American University School of International Service said, "War in industrial areas creates extensive risks of toxic contamination, given the concentration of power-generating stations, chemical plants, metalworking factories”.
