PM Addresses Environmental Effects Of E-Waste Disposal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday that only 15 to 17% of the e-waste produced annually is recycled, calling attention to the negative effects of the growing e-waste. He also devoted a significant portion of the 97th episode of his Mann ki Baat radio show to addressing environmental issues.

While praising the government's efforts over the previous eight years, the PM also emphasized the importance of protecting wetlands. He claims that India now has 75 wetlands, an increase from 26 in 2014.

E-Waste Production & Recycling

The PM stated that there is a need to raise awareness about proper electronic waste disposal. The newest gadgets of today will eventually become electronic waste. It is crucial to know whether a device is being disposed of properly or not when someone buys a new one or replaces an old one, he said. According to him, properly disposing of e-waste not only helps the environment but also helps the economy through recycling and reuse.

According to a report by the UN, e-waste is produced at a rate of close to 50,000,000 metric tons annually. The total weight of all commercial aircraft produced throughout human history will be less than this amount. 800 laptops are discarded every second. You might be surprised to learn that nearly 17 different kinds of precious metals, including gold, silver, copper, and nickel, can be extracted from this waste, the PM said, noting that there are already a number of start-ups working in this area.

The PM also mentioned the recently given Padma awards in his speech, the first of the year, and noted that the choice of candidates from a variety of communities—more specifically, the scheduled caste and tribal communities—had been praised.
