Nandan Mall: Hulladek Create A Better Future By Recycling It

In order to collect electronic waste from doorsteps and recycle it for a greener tomorrow, Nandan Mall, a young man from Kolkata, has launched a novel initiative called Hulladek. The slogan "Hungry for Waste" for Hulladek gives some indication of the language it is based on. Hulladek, a project named after the Hungarian word for "waste," is attempting to raise awareness of the fact that electronics may be put to many different uses when their useful life is ended in twenty different Indian states.

E-Waste is anything electronic that has reached the end of its useful life. It is known as WEEE, or waste electrical and electronic equipment, on a global scale.

Inspiration For The Initiative

Nandan shared that the business plan produced for this was part of my undergraduate project at St. Xavier's Kolkata and eventually made it to intra- and inter-college contests. “I made contact with a recycling facility in Bangalore after determining I wanted to move this initiative along”, he added. He also worked for a recycling firm in Spain & spent two years learning the fundamentals of managing e-waste. “After that time, I decided to start my own E-Waste management company, Hulladek”

In many areas, Hulladek has been successful in changing customer behavior. Over the past five to six years, there has unquestionably been a rise in public awareness of e-waste and the fact that it shouldn't be simply thrown away. To inform people more about the trash management process, Hulladek periodically holds awareness campaigns in and around the city.

Procedure For Collecting & Recycling

The central storage is situated in a remote region of the city and has skilled collectors who go to doorsteps and collect the electronic waste post. The waste is then separated after which it is transported to the recycler. The garbage is then broken down by the recycler into plastic, glass, metals, and potentially dangerous substances.

To ensure that there are no dangerous emissions from the hazardous materials, they are transferred there for treatment. The remaining goods are distributed to the market, where they can be used to create unique objects.

Hulladek's Future For Upcoming Year

The company aims to eventually have its own recycling facility, which will have at least L2 facilities for recovering valuable metals from the garbage. “By launching a campus ambassador program, we also hope to increase our logistical capacity and engage the student body in our efforts to promote e-waste awareness and collection in educational institutions”, he said.
