Japan and Russia have signed a cooperation agreement to work together on Hydrogen production. In a virtual meeting at the Eastern Economic Forum, the two nations agreed to cooperate in R&D and on technology to lower global warming emissions including carbon capture, storage, and utilization.
Japan aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050, while Russia has targeted to reduce 70% of its carbon emissions by 2030. Hydrogen is used in oil refining and ammonia is used in fertilizers and both of these have the potential to replace higher carbon fuels. Japan aims to increase its annual hydrogen demand to 3 million tonnes by 2030, and up to 20 million tonnes by 2050.
