In 2023, India ranks 112th out of 166 nations in terms of progress towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, ahead of only Pakistan and Afghanistan in South Asia.
The think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) produced the State of India's Environment 2024 study, which is based on the United Nations' Sustainable Development Study 2023. India has improved its standing from 121st in 2022, although it still lags below Bhutan, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Pakistan is ranked 128th, while Afghanistan is 158th.
India has a 63.45% score on indicators such as poverty, sustainable consumption, climate action, and responsible consumerism. However, its performance has decreased in terms of eliminating inequities and conserving biodiversity, with India ranking near the bottom of the rankings.
India has performed poorly in terms of sustainable cities, equality, clean water and sanitation, peace, justice, and strong institutions. The United Nations approved the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 as a worldwide call to action to eradicate poverty, safeguard the environment, and promote peace and prosperity by 2030.
