India’s first e-waste project Vadodara E-Waste Project which was launched on Feb 14 2014 by the then CM of Gujarat Narendra Modi has officially been shut down after two years of no functioning.
The project was initiated by the Vadodra Municipal Corporation and they were also awarded the Golden and E-India Award at the national level in the year 2014.
The project had a special helpline number by which the citizens used to contact the Municipal corporation to avail of the pick-up facility of the accumulated e-waste such as mobile phones, laptops, and TV. The agency staff used to reach out to the person concerned on calls or SMS on that number from the residents and after collecting the e-waste from there, it was carefully disposed of by scientific method.
During the pandemic period, the contact number and the SMS services were not active for the past two years and hence the MNP finally decided to call off the project.
