Finland Sets Ambitions Target For Cutting Emissions

Finland has set a very ambitious target for itself for cutting carbon emissions. It has passed a law that requires the country to go carbon neutral by 2035 and carbon negative–i.e it’ll absorb more carbon than it will emit– by 2040.

Finland is the only developed nation that has set such a steep target for itself, the environment minister of Finland said that developed nations have a responsibility to take an aggressive approach to tackle climate change because they have been responsible for much of the emissions and they can afford to pay for renewable energy and carbon offsetting technologies.

Finland's major problem is not the use of fossil fuel but the rapid deforestation that had taken place in the country, the wood from trees is used to make paper and for burning. Forests cover three-quarters of the land area of Finland. The Finnish environment minister said that Finland intends to achieve the targets without using carbon credits.
