Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki: The Man Bringing Solar Smiles

In the heart of a small village in Madhya Pradesh, where connectivity was a constant challenge and a single classroom held five classes, a young boy named Chetan Singh Solanki dreamt big. Little did he know, his dreams would one day bring the magic of sunlight to millions of lives across India.

When Chetan was a kid, his village didn't have electricity. He knew how lucky he was to study in Indore and Mumbai, and he really wanted to help his fellow villagers. As he grew up and advanced in his life, he realized his village needed basic things for progress, unlike the fancy technology in cities. He came up with ideas to use the sun's power and solar energy in his village. He imagined how sunlight could make his village better.

Chetan was very determined. He left his job and set on a journey to Europe for a PhD in solar energy. He wanted to come back and use that knowledge to make a real difference in India. With the knowledge he gained, he became a teacher at IIT Bombay, a big school where he could work on his solar dreams.

In the year 2010, Dr. Chetan took a giant step. He started a school near his village. This school was special because it ran on the power of the sun! Can you believe that? The sunlight was used to make electricity for the school. The school had a big area for playing, almost 14 acres, and more than a thousand students came to learn there.

In 2012, he took a break from his regular job and went to stay in a village for three months. Dr. Chetan saw that people used kerosene lamps to light up their homes because there was no electricity. He realised that there were three main problems: solar lamps were too expensive for many people to buy, they were not always available, and if they broke, it was hard to fix them.

He had a clever idea to solve these problems. He thought if they make the solar lamps right there in the village, it would be much cheaper. This way, they could save money and make sure the lamps were always there when people needed them. Plus, if people in the village learned how to make and fix the lamps, it would be easy to keep them working.

Guess what? His idea worked really well! In just four months, they made 20,000 solar lamps. And guess what else? They made the lamps cost half as much, so more people could afford them. The whole plan was a big success!

But Chetan's dreams didn't stop there. He wanted to empower more than just homes – he wanted to empower minds. He wanted to teach young people how to make their own solar lamps. It wasn't just about lamps; it was like starting a wave of change. With the Energy Swaraj Foundation, Chetan set out to train students to make their own solar lamps. It wasn't just about the lamps; it was like a puzzle that, when solved, could bring light to the whole country.

Now, what is Swaraj?

Imagine if we could make our own power and use it without needing help from far away. That's called "Swaraj," which means being independent and taking care of ourselves. When we create our own energy from things around us and use it wisely, that's like reaching "energy swaraj." It's like becoming superheroes of energy in our own little world!

Chetan's journey took him to 30 countries to talk about solar energy. He saw that many governments were focused on growing their countries, but they didn't think about how it affected the Earth. Chetan realized that each person, even kids, played a part in taking care of our planet.

In 2020, Chetan began an amazing journey called the Energy Swaraj Yatra. He left his home and family to travel in a solar-powered bus. This special bus had a bedroom, an office, a kitchen, and a training room – all powered by the sun!

The yatra gave him the title of Solar Man of India, and he knew a bigger journey has started. He stated his beliefs on the Gandhian philosophy, ‘There is enough in nature only for the need and not for the greed.’ This is the reason some people even gave him a nickname, "Solar Gandhi."

As the bus travelled through cities and states, it showed everyone what the sun's power could do. Chetan believes that every person is important. He asked a thought-provoking question, "Once upon a time, there were dinosaurs; do we want 'once upon a time there were humans'?"

His vision of Energy Swaraj isn't just about sustainability; it’s about survival. Dr. Chetan urged us to rethink our consumption, to avoid and minimize, and to generate our own energy. He saw a world where local solutions could solve global problems, where every individual played a part in climate correction. He aims to reach over 100 crore people and inspire one crore families to switch to solar energy, making a deep impact on India's energy landscape.

Because of Dr. Chetan's hard work, many homes now have solar lamps that bring light and hope. But his impact is even bigger. He started a movement to make people aware of important things like using less energy and taking care of our Earth.

And so, as the solar superhero's bus rolled on, it carried not just his dreams, but the dreams of a nation. Dr. Chetan Singh Solanki, the Solar Man of India, shows us that with determination, innovation, and the power of the sun, we can create a future that shines as bright as the day.
