In a remarkable feat to achieve the net-zero target Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has become India’s first airport to fully function from solar and hydro energy. The IGI airport’s 94 percent energy demands are being met by hydropower electricity and the rest 6 percent from on-site solar plants.
The Delhi airport has a 7.84 MW solar power plant on the airside, while it added another 5.3 MW rooftop solar power plant at the cargo terminal recently as part of stakeholder collaboration.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) reported that they have installed solar plants on the airside and on the cargo terminal roofs. They have also partnered with a HImacha-based hydropower producing company for the supply of hydroelectricity to the airport until 2036.
Apart from the above-mentioned green project, Delhi’s IGI airport has also employed other green initiatives such as green buildings and using EVs to reduce the carbon emission contribution of the airport.
