World has crossed another threshold of climate crisis. The carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has crossed the limit of 420ppm (parts per million).
According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) report, the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere crossed the 420 PPM mark in May this year, it was 217 in the year 2020 and 219 in May last year. This is 50% more than pre-industrial levels. Carbon dioxide levels were at the 288PPM mark for about 6000 years before the industrial age arrived.
The silver lining is that the growth rate of carbon dioxide concentration is showing a slowing trend in the last two years, this may be because of reduced industrial activity and travel due to the global pandemic. The growth rate is determined by the change in carbon dioxide concentration that year, the growth rate peaked in the year 2016 at 3.03. Although historically the rate has been fluctuating from below 1 to almost 3. This time as the world is undergoing a massive energy transition from fossil fuels to renewables, hopefully, the growth rate of concentration if not the concentration itself will go down.
