Bihar's Low-Carbon Waste Management Initiative

Bihar is implementing a strategy plan to enhance waste management, with the goal of being a Net Zero state by 2070. Recently, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled a draft plan, the first of its type in India, aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions and creating a sustainable environment. The strategy, produced by ICLEI South Asia, evaluates the waste and wastewater sectors and identifies areas for development.

The proposal incorporates low-carbon interventions and emission-reduction measures aimed at recovering methane from wastewater treatment. Bihar wants to provide universal access to proper toilets by 2024 and efficient wastewater treatment by 2070. The plan focuses on waste minimization, segregation, and proper disposal procedures.

Emissions from garbage increased considerably between 2016 and 2020, requiring immediate action. The state intends to improve waste management procedures, such as composting and biomethanation. Collaboration among stakeholders is critical for successful implementation, resulting in significant greenhouse gas reductions throughout Bihar. This effort exemplifies Bihar's commitment to a greener, lower-carbon future.
