The Bengaluru Climate Action Plan is a multi-pronged project aimed at reaching carbon neutrality in the city by 2050.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is spearheading the plan, which will be launched in August 2021, and has sought the expertise of the World Resources Institute (WRI) as the worldwide consultant. Key environmental issues identified in the strategy include urban heat, flooding, droughts, thunderstorms, lightning, and air pollution.
It was revealed during a recent meeting held by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar that 269 steps are in place to combat the effects of climate change, with the BBMP monitoring the implementation of 143 of these projects. Bengaluru, along with other major Indian cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, plays an important role as a co-lead in the Global Air Quality Network for the C40 cities global network. C40, a global alliance of mayors devoted to combating the climate problem, asks that its member cities reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
To establish the climate action plan, the BBMP worked with more than 25 stakeholders, including governmental entities and corporations, and was supported by WRI. Stationary energy, buildings, transportation, solid waste management, air quality, water, wastewater, stormwater management, urban planning, greening, biodiversity, and disaster management are all priority areas for climate change solutions. Bengaluru's dedication to sustainable urban development and environmental care is reflected in this collaborative endeavor.
