Adani Power’s new initiative to reduce carbon emissions

Adani Power Ltd., India's largest private-sector power generator, is launching an innovative initiative to cut carbon emissions at its Mundra plant.

The Mundra Plant, the country's largest private-sector power facility, will use up to 20% green ammonia in a conventional coal-fired 330MW Unit as part of the project. Green ammonia, which is created from green hydrogen produced by renewable energy-powered electrolysis, is a carbon-neutral alternative for boiler fuel because its combustion produces no CO2.

Adani Power plans to pioneer this green effort in collaboration with Japan's IHI Corporation and Kowa. IHI specializes in ammonia firing technology, whereas Kowa focuses on energy-saving goods. Combustion tests are currently underway at IHI's Japanese site, emulating Mundra Power Station equipment with a 20% ammonia blend. Positive test results could pave the door for wider adoption at Mundra once economic viability is shown.

The project is consistent with Adani Power's aim to reduce its carbon footprint throughout its value chain. It is a member of the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership, which works to achieve energy security, carbon neutrality, and economic prosperity. The project, which was chosen through the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization's (NEDO) initiative, contributes to global efforts in decarbonization and energy transition.
