South Delhi's Tekhand waste-to-energy plant will become operational by August this year. The officials of South Delhi Municipal Corporation said. This plant will be SDMC’s second waste-to-energy plant which is expected to process 2,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste in a day. The facility will spread across 15 acres near Tehkhand. The second plant's operationalization next year will process almost 100% of municipal waste being generated in the SDMC areas. Presently, only 53% of waste is being processed while the rest is dumped at the Okhla landfill. The areas under SDMC generate a total of 3,600 tonnes of municipal waste every day.

As of now, Delhi has three operational waste-to-energy plants in Narela, Okhla, and Ghazipur which have an aggregate capacity to process 5,250 tonnes of waste to generate power of a capacity of 52MW. Delhi generates about 11,144 tonnes of waste. In 2019, a second plant with 1,500 TPD (tonnes per day) capacity was to be built near Bhalswa as well. The new engineered landfill sites will take only the ash and burnt leftovers from the plant and the components of waste that can't be incinerated. The Tehkhand and Okhla plant will together generate 400-500 tonnes of waste which will be dumped at the newly engineered landfills.
