PK Mishra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's principal secretary, highlighted the significance of sustainable growth during the 56th Annual Conference of the Odisha Economic Association in Sambalpur, Odisha. Mishra remarked that great growth without sustainability would be meaningless.
Mishra cited global developments such as supply chain disruptions, artificial intelligence issues, and the move to renewable energy as ways to minimize carbon emissions. He stressed the importance of economic research in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the reality that sustainable growth takes into account economic, social, and environmental aspects. He underlined Prime Minister Modi's vision for India in 2047, which encourages economic self-reliance and inclusivity while combating corruption, casteism, and communalism.
Mishra described India's efforts towards sustainable development, including its role in the G20 Presidency and projects such as the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) concept, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the International Solar Alliance. He commended second-generation reforms including GST implementation and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.
Mishra focused infrastructure development projects such as PM Gatishakti and the National Logistics Policy as ways to improve connectivity. He also praised efforts to integrate Indian businesses into the global value chain and encourage investment through programmes such as the production-linked incentive (PLI).
Mishra praised the government's efforts to promote human capital, such as the National Education Policy 2020 and several welfare programmes like the PM Awaas Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat Programme. He emphasised the necessity of risk and uncertainty management in long-term economic growth, and proposed foundations for India to become an anti-fragile country based on Nassim Nicholas Taleb's idea of antifragility. Community-based initiatives, durable infrastructure, a strong financial system, social protection, and long-term natural resource management are among the foundations.
