The Jammu & Kashmir Pollution Control Committee held an interactive workshop on "Implementation of EPR under E-waste (Management) Rules- 2022 and Plastic Waste Management (Second Amendment) Rules, 2022" on Friday, October 2, 2023, at the Jammu Convention Center.
The purpose of the workshop was to provide interested parties and implementation departments with a common forum for talking about various EPR Rules-related topics. The honoree was Dr. Neelu Gera, Chairperson of the J&K Pollution Control Committee, and the chief guest was Sanjeev Verma, Commissioner Secretary of the Department of Forestry, Ecology, and the Environment.
Relevant Regulations For Plastic & E-Waste
Dignitaries toured exhibits set up by various organizations before the workshop got underway, including Shalimar Thermoforming Private Limited Samba, Indian Pollution Control Association, Lifecycle Management Private Limited, Saahas Zero Waste, the Self Helf Group (NRLM) Block Dhansal, Himalaya Green Himachal Pradesh, and VRG Groups, Gangyal.
Sanjeev Verma commended the JKPCC for organizing such events and urged all parties, particularly the district administration, to ensure that the pertinent rules governing both plastic and e-waste are being implemented effectively. He emphasized the need to connect the growing threat of plastic and e-waste pollution with unpredictable disasters due to the release of toxic gases into the environment through the unscientific dumping and disposal of such waste.
Safe & Separate Waste Collection
In her speech, Dr. Gera emphasized the need for stakeholder departments like Urban Local Bodies to act quickly to facilitate the safe and separate collection of such wastes while also making the locations of the collection points known to the general public. She also asked the Rural Development Department to ensure that the rules were followed to the letter and spirit at the panchayat level because rural areas are now recognized as being equally responsible for the generation of both types of waste. Sat Paul, regional director for JKPCC, gave a briefing on the interactive workshop's goals.
K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary JKPCC, informed the crowd that the new E-waste and Plastic Waste Rules have increased the responsibility of the respective producers and recyclers, and he pleaded for their adherence to the set rules in this regard. During the workshop, Abhishek Agshe, co-founder and CEO of Lifecycle Management Private Limited, gave a presentation on the responsibility placed on recyclers by the E-waste Rules, and Shoba Raghavan, director and COO of Saa Has Zero Waste, gave a presentation on the Producer's Responsibility for implementation of EPR as per those rules.
