Tamil Nadu Takes a Stand for Olive Ridley Turtles: Installs Climate-Resilient Hatcheries

In an effort to safeguard the endangered Olive Ridley turtles, Tamil Nadu has embarked on a pioneering initiative. The state government has established the first-ever climate-resilient hatcheries in ten locations across eight coastal districts. This move addresses the growing threats posed by climate change to these vulnerable creatures.

This year marks a significant season for Olive Ridley nesting in Tamil Nadu. Recognizing the urgency, authorities have set up a record 45 hatcheries across nine districts. This has resulted in the collection of over 220,000 eggs, the highest number ever recorded. Forest department personnel and dedicated volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of nesting turtles and the successful release of hatchlings back into the sea.

One notable example is the climate-resilient hatchery established at MGR Thittu in the Vellar seashore area. This facility has already witnessed the release of approximately 2,000 hatchlings.  These hatcheries are specifically designed to withstand the challenges of a changing climate. Features like adjustable welded iron poles with covers provide protection against extreme weather events, such as heavy rainfall.

This initiative by the Tamil Nadu government demonstrates a commendable commitment to environmental conservation. By prioritizing the well-being of Olive Ridley turtles and implementing innovative solutions, Tamil Nadu sets an example for other regions grappling with the ecological repercussions of climate change.
