A team of social scientists have researched and published a paper, titled Appropriate Technologies for Value Addition in Rural Indian Villages, on 'Smart villages-bridging the Global urban-rural divide'. The study stated that there has been a decline in women gaining successful employment has only declined since the past few years. Thus there is a need for sustainability in the economic sphere of the rural community.

Students from Sona college proposed a project at the Women Technology Park( WTP) in Salem, Tamil Nadu. Through this project, they are turning rural women into self-sustained entrepreneurs. The technology involves a solar power food dehydrator, which dries out vegetables and fruits in just a few hours.

This initiative is bound to help set up cottage industries for rural women and add to the supply of food, by manufacturing rot-resistant edible items. These can be used to create candies or used in powdered form.

There are 5 other similar projects running, to provide sustainable employment options to village women, in their own places. One of them involves tile making for textiles and fabrics. It is made by mixing concrete and steel slag from local steel plants. Science and technology are the only way forward for sustainable growth in both urban and rural sectors.
