India's President Droupadi Murmu has reaffirmed the country's commitment to renewable energy while emphasizing the enduring necessity of fossil fuel-based electricity.
President Murmu spoke at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2023, highlighting India's efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote clean coal technologies. She observed that India's ranking in the Climate Change Performance Index has risen from 30th to 7th over a decade, demonstrating the country's commitment to environmental stewardship.
President Murmu highlighted the need for resource optimization, energy efficiency, and innovation. She delivered the National Energy Conservation Awards 2023 and underlined the necessity of implementing large-scale energy-saving measures. President Murmu has advocated for increasing energy generation from renewable sources such as wind, solar, and micro-hydro projects. She also cited measures such as the 'Green Energy Open Access Rules, 2022,' renewable purchase responsibilities, and the recently launched "Green Credit" project connected with 'LiFE' (Lifestyle for Environment).
RK Singh, Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister talked about India's achievements in energy conservation and commitment to lowering carbon emissions. He discussed BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) programs that are reducing carbon emissions significantly and emphasized that India's per capita greenhouse emissions are one-third of the global average. Singh added that India wants to have 65% of its total power capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030, making it a leader in climate action aligned with a world temperature rise of less than 2 degrees Celsius. On December 14, the event commemorated National Energy Conservation Day, promoting the importance of energy conservation and highlighting the nation's achievements in energy efficiency.
