Baguio City's government is taking urgent initiatives to promote responsible management in order to tackle the rising issue of electronic trash (e-waste).
During a recent conference, Mayor Benjamin Magalong spoke passionately to citizens, particularly youngsters, encouraging joint efforts to reduce the careless disposal of discarded electronic items. Mayor Magalong identified e-waste as one of the planet's fastest-growing environmental challenges and emphasized the need for a shift in thinking toward appropriate disposal.
The forum, co-organized by environmental agencies and civil society organizations, focused on the dangerous compounds found in e-waste, such as heavy metals and toxic chemicals, emphasizing their negative influence on the environment and public health. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the city is working with governmental and international organizations, such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, to establish Baguio City's first e-waste facility in Bakakeng Central.
The program has received international acclaim, with environmentalists from the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation praising Baguio City's foresight. As a practical measure, the municipal government has directed barangays to collect e-waste at designated drop-off places. The Special Services Division will oversee compliance, signaling a big step forward in the region's e-waste management.
