A recent report reveals a concerning reality for India's progress towards the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the 'State of India's Environment 2024' report, India ranks a concerning 112th among 166 countries in achieving these critical goals.
While this marks a slight improvement from the previous year's ranking of 121st, India still falls behind numerous South Asian nations, including Bhutan (61st), Sri Lanka (83rd), and Nepal (99th). This raises concerns about the nation's progress on various fronts, including social welfare, environmental protection, and economic development.
Experts like Nitin Desai, former UN undersecretary-general for economic and social affairs, highlighted the concerning gap between India's economic growth and its performance on social and environmental parameters. This suggests that economic advancement has not translated into tangible improvements in the lives of many citizens.
The report also highlights specific areas where India's performance has deteriorated, such as "reducing inequalities" and "life on land." This underscores the need for immediate and targeted interventions to address these crucial areas and ensure India moves on a more sustainable and equitable development path.
