India has officially joined the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, which is an organization of more than 70 countries encouraging the adoption of the global goal to protect at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean by 2030. The 30x30 target of this group is a global target that aims to halt the accelerating loss of biodiversity (including flora and fauna) and protecting vital ecosystems.
Presently, about 15% of the world’s land and seven percent of the ocean are protected. To achieve the goal of protecting at least one-third by 2030, current land protections have to be doubled and ocean protections need to be quadrupled.
