The Goa administration has launched on a drive to position itself as a wind electricity generation hub by launching 100MW Vertical Axis Wind Turbine projects around the state. The Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to manufacturers and developers interested in establishing wind power plants in Goa using vertical axis wind turbines.
While the project cost is not stated in the EOI, these enterprises often exceed Rs 700 crore. The project scope comprises creating Vertical Axis Wind Projects, establishing Evacuation Infrastructure to the nearest substation, and providing electricity to the Goa Electricity Department (GED) over a 30-year period.
The decision comes as Goa's per capita power consumption doubles the national average, with considerable increases in customers, energy sales, and connected loads expected between 2019 and 2021. According to Central Electricity Authority data, Goa had a total installed power capacity of 74.79 MW in November 2022, including 26.79 MW from renewable energy and 48 MW from gas power plants. This ambitious step demonstrates Goa's dedication to sustainable energy practices and addressing its expanding energy consumption with renewable sources.
