Global Aid Helps Turkey-Syria Earthquake Disaster Victims

More bodies were found in the rubble of demolished buildings on Tuesday, bringing the overall death toll from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and numerous aftershocks to more than 7,700. Thousands of injuries had also been reported in earthquake-stricken Turkey and Syria, where rescue teams were forced to sift through the rubble. Three catastrophic earthquakes, measuring 7.8, 7.6, and 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck Turkey's southern regions on Monday, wreaking havoc throughout both Turkey and neighboring Syria. Tuesday saw yet another earthquake of magnitude 5.6. Numerous aftershocks have also occurred. A seven-day national mourning period has been declared in Turkey.

Paw Out To Help

Turkey has received aid from India in the form of NDRF Search and Rescue Teams, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling equipment, and other machinery. Hours earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had contacted the earthquake-stricken nation. In a letter to PM Modi, the Turkish ambassador to India, Firat Sunel, wrote: "'Dost' is a common word in Turkish and Hindi. "A friend in need is a friend indeed," goes the Turkish proverb, "Dost kara günde belli olur."

Rescue personnel from ISAR Germany in North Rhine-Westphalia traveled to the disaster zones to aid the victims of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey. This personnel included both human and canine rescuers. After an earthquake across a large region killed and injured thousands of people, toppled thousands of buildings, and left thousands more missing, rescuers in Turkey and war-torn Syria searched through the icy night into Tuesday in the hopes of finding more survivors among the rubble.
