A month-long e-waste collection drive launched by the Mandevian Teachers Association from the Management Development Institute (MDI) in collaboration with NGO Saahas ended by establishing e-waste collection centres at different locations in Gurugram’s sectors 14 & 17.
The program was launched with the aim to spread awareness about E-waste management in the city and avoid the segregation of e-waste with municipal waste. The images of the electrical items such as mobile phones, laptops, washing machines, dryers, home entertainment and stereo systems were listed on the collection centres with a caption of “know your e-waste” to aware the citizens. The awareness drive was conducted in schools, universities and residential societies and through radio and social media platforms.
Professor Anil Misra, secretary of MANDETA highlighted that the e-waste generation would spike as the demand for electrical gadgets such as laptops has increased during the pandemic period. So, the proper dumping of electronic waste is necessary as the materials like lead used in these gadgets emit harmful chemicals when burning and affect humans and the environment.
