The Municipal Corporation of Delhi launched a trial effort to clean eight marketplaces using battery-powered devices, which was inaugurated by Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi. The effort's goal is to assess the effectiveness of these ecologically friendly devices, with the option of spreading their use to other marketplaces in Delhi if successful.
The machines, which operate twice daily, deliver 8-10 hours of cleaning on a single battery. Oberoi mentioned the issue of preserving cleanliness in Delhi's markets, as well as the devices' dust and noise reduction capabilities.
The marketplaces selected include South Extension, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Ajmal Khan, DC Chowk in Rohini, Kamla Nagar, Sector 10 in Dwarka, Balco Market in IP Extension, and Basant Lok Market in Vasant Vihar.
Recognizing the limitations of mechanical sweeping equipment in populated areas, Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal voiced optimism about the new gadgets' potential usefulness in congested commercial zones like Karol Bagh and Lajpat Nagar. If successful, the program intends to expand to all 250 wards in Delhi, with equipment leased for three years to maintain market share.
