Karnataka's Forest Minister, Eshwar Khandre, has issued a strong warning to those violating e-waste management rules in the state. Amidst rising concerns about the increasing amount of electronic waste, Khandre emphasized the enforcement of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), holding manufacturers responsible for responsible disposal of their products.
The minister highlighted the alarming statistic of 0.8 million metric tonnes of e-waste generated annually in Karnataka, contributing to the national figure of 3.8 million metric tonnes. He stressed the importance of proper e-waste management, urging processors, recyclers, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to regulations. Khandre condemned the practice of dumping e-waste in vacant lands, emphasizing the environmental and health hazards it poses.
The meeting, attended by e-waste stakeholders and officials from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, served as a reminder of the seriousness of the issue. Khandre's firm stance indicates the government's commitment to tackling the problem through stricter enforcement and collaboration. This move is expected to encourage responsible e-waste management practices, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment in Karnataka.
