Since the announcement of the Delhi government of a strict ban on sale, purchase and usage of fire crackers, more states are stepping on the control of pollution this diwali season. The Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB), declared the allowance of 'green crackers' in a two-hour time period.

On Diwali, Chhat Puja and Christmas, a two hour window period will be allowed to burn only the green crackers. Green crackers have been developed by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). They have tried to reduce its impact by shrinking the shell size, amount of ash usage and overall reduction of raw materials. These structural changes have brought a change in the emissions being 20% - 30% particulate matter-free . There is an additional reduction of 10% in gaseous emissions.
Assam also has many cities with AQI 101-200 which falls in the poor category. The Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sharma, took to twitter regarding the usage of green crackers only. The firecracker industry of India makes an estimated 3000 Crore per year, but the loss in health of Indians is much more in value. However, the question of green crackers bringing a big change in the AQI around Diwali is still a big question.
